I’m looking at this coin at an on line dealer. It’s PCGS graded AU53. What would you consider a reasonable price?
I always look at past eBay sales to get a gauge on what people are paying for an item. Auction history is generally a pretty good indicator.
PCGS themselves list a ‘55 DDO-001 AU53 BROWN for $2,600-2,650.00. What is the dealer selling it for? Is it a BN, RB or RD????. Can you post a picture of it?…Spark
PCGS Coin Facts show a couple of AU 55's sold at Heritage auctions in January 2024 for $2040 and $2160. An AU 53 sold a year ago at a Stacks Bowers auction for $2280. So I would put a reasonable price at $2100 if I was interested in buying it.
Heritage shows 16 in AU grades sold in 2024 (one AU53 Cleaned). Excluding the details coin, prices ranged $1920-2400 in AU55 and $2040-2520 in AU58. Average AU55 price $2101. I would expect to pay somewhat less for AU53 but it depends on how nice it is.
I tried to post pictures but messed up somehow. The pics are from the seller. Here they are. Pretty dark.
Given those pictures I would be hesitant to bid or buy. Certification is not everything. There are dogs in all holders, including PCGS. Coins can change colors in the holders if they have been messed with. The 1955 doubled die is not a rare coin. There are plenty of them around. I bought this one with ANACS Papers many years ago. NGC called it MS-62 brown when I had them grade it.
It looks like there is green stuff inside the “E” in “CENT.” Since it’s slabbed, you can’t do anything about that. If it’s PVC (poly vinyl chloride) it’s not good. The toning is also uneven on the reverse. Better examples without these issues are available.
Personally I would want my money back. That green spot is definitely concerning. There are lots of these out there, you can do better.
