Can somebody tell me what this double die is worth? It's also an off center strike. You can see obvious doubling on the date. Thank you!

Yea I'm a little suspicious about the coin because I know what 1955 dd are usually worth. But after reading the link from furryfrog02 I'd say this is a fake coin. I appreciate everybody's help!

Wow! Thank you "clawcoins' that confirms it for me. Really sad that people try to pull a scam like that. I hope everyone has a merry Christmas!

I have never seen an off-center doubled die! Super, wicked cool! You have a variety and a Mint error in one!

As far as value, this is tricky. Here is why...

Vary rare coins (1909-S VDB, 1914-D, 1955 Doubled Die, etc.) are collected because people like owning something few people have due to very low mintages and/or very few still exist (known as "extant.")

The problem is that with those highly-collectible and rare coins, people do not like major problems with them as the goal is to acquire the best specimen one can afford. Rare coins that are scratched, improperly cleaned, damaged, etc. are tougher to sell and drag prices down.

Technically, although your off-center 1955 doubled die is not numismatically considered "damaged," most standard rare coin collectors generally do not want imperfect specimens like that and will consider that to be the equivalent of being damaged.

However, it is not just a run-of-the-mill off-center Wheat cent either. It is a 1955 doubled die!

Therefore, price guides do you no good. I would put that at about 10% off center, and say it would be about half the value of whatever grade it is if it weren't off-centered (assuming it also isn't scratched, cleaned, etc.). And assuming it is even real.

That was weird. The only postings i saw were the OP, paddy's, and mine. I clicked my alerts and all the others were there in between. Strange!!!

Btw, @Zman, probably others who responded are just plain tired of correcting others about this, so I'll pick up the slack.....the term is "doubled die" not double die.

Its is not an Ebay listing. Thanks for the correction LaCointessa. I'm new to coin collecting but I'll remember its " doubled die"!

FYI ... don't shop for coins on Etsy or Craigslist. They probably have more fake coins than real.
