For those of you that don't get the weekly issue of Coin World, on this weeks mag. on pg 44 it states there is a new fake type DDO found in the New Bay Area. Bits and pieces taken from the article by Michael Fahey senior numisatist at ANACS "Most of the obverse and reverse diagnostics of a genuine 1955 Lincoln, the exception is the lack of the extended "X" of the die polish under the left crossbar of the letter "T" in cent." All of the finer detials that appear on a genuine 55 have been reproduced. They believe the countfeiters have originated these cents in Northern california. if you believe that you may received a coin from the Bay Area, look for the fine striations found on the edge of a genuine U.S. coin. These striations are caused by a metal flow either from the blank-punching operation or when the struck coin is ejected from the minting press. Cents and 5 cents pieces are examples of coins with smooth edges which make these fine lines show much easier then coins with reeded edges. On the counterfeit it will show an even microspocially porous texture that is usually identical to the obverse and reverse surfaces. compare this to a 55 UNC cent so you can familarize yourself with the edge. it goes on to state that if you locate on and unsure if it's real you should pay to get it graded. I am sure pictures would however I am SOL in that department. -Shrek
Good question. Then you must ask yourself if they will regrade for free to make sure they graded it properly.
It is getting harder and harder to get Genuine coins that are raw and now they are good enough to maybe even fool grading services. Tim
I hope they catch these people and string em up by their #^*$. One day everyone who owns a 55 DDO will have to resubmit them so they can be xrayed some how. Don't say no, it'll probably happen one day...
It's really too bad that someone with enough talent and brains to reproduce an almost perfect reproduction of a true rarity couldn't use their skills to make an honest living. I hope he/ she/ they accidentally get their hand caught in the press, and are about eight feet from the nearest phone when it happens!!!
