I have had this 1955 DDO for years and can't remember what I paid for it. Just curious what people think the value of it is.
Wow! Absolutely that one should be slabbed. Numismatists will always regard that coin as suspect as long as it is raw. If genuine, it is easily a four figure coin and I wouldn’t dare try to attest to its authenticity without having the coin in hand…. And here’s the deal. The Chinese have been producing some fairly convincing counterfeits of this one. So absolutely, if you plan to market this coin, it absolutely must be slabbed.
It is suspicious that a prominent variety of this nature should show up all of a sudden. You’ll have to get it authenticated.
To everyone. Be cautious as how you approach this post. If you are not 110% certain as to its authenticity, then you open the gate to a copy and paste of your attribution being used on another site to sell this. Our Op is new and I'm not saying he would do this, but we all need to be careful.
To be honest the coins shade in the picture is not what it looks like in hand. There is no redness on the coin but the picture did make it look like it. In actuality it is definitely brown.
I have my doubts about it's authenticity but still possible. http://www.varietyvista.com/01a LC Doubled Dies Vol 1/1955PDDO001.htm
I doubt its authenticity as well. Obviously there is a lot of wear on the high spots. My doubt is directed at the low spots on the high details. Lincoln's mouth, nose and eye are lower details than his ear, hair and cheekbone. The mouth, nose and eye have no detail whatsoever, even though they are lower details than the other high spots. The entire portrait of Lincoln is muted. I wouldn't touch this coin, in a sale situation, without confirming its attribution.
That would be quite the find. What's going on with the mark on the reverse at 6 O'clock. Just the photo, or ???
I don't think it is legit. The tail ends of the fives on the genuine point to 7 oclock. Those fives go on round to about 9 oclock. It also looks like it was fashioned out of modeling clay. The wear on the obverse doesn't match the reverse wear. The lettering ' In God " doesn't seem to match either .
As you can see there is a difference of opinion about your coin! I fall on the suspicious side of the debate; but I would definitely pay to send it off! If it's real, money well spent! If it's fake, you saved yourself some embarrassment! Good luck!!!
