    Hello Everyone and Happy Almost-Spring.

I just opened up a roll of pennies I bought off eBay, all were 1955 D and in BU condition.

Eight or nine of them are D/D and can be seen without the loupe.

Half of the roll has a strange look on the reverse. You can see the silhouette of Lincoln with an obvious depression out-lining him. Is this common?( my cherry pickers guide doesn't explain this )

Also, about a third of the roll has what looks like the number one under his chin.

Just curious if these are all common errors, they are all getting saved in the collection but I was concerned if the errors might be worth setting aside special.

    Thanks

P.S. The Roll was stamped " Bankers Trust" and I paid 20 bucks for the roll ( free shipping ):computer:

The faint outline of Lincoln's bust on the reverse is most likely a form of die deterioration. It was pretty common back then.

    Some Pics

Here are some shots I took.

Number One and Three are the one shaped under the chin.

Number Two and Four are the Silhouettes.

On a Large Cent, I would call it an incusion. It's usually a little sharper. That was caused by the pressing of the obverse and reverse dies without a planchet which would leave the opposite side impressed on the die. I'm not sure modern roll presses have the same problem.

Naaa, I'm usually the one out-bidded. I set a price and stick to it and wait to see how the chips fall and sometimes the buyer can't buy for some reason and they give you a second chance offer ( unless it was the roll with the 1909 VDB on one end and the 1906 IHC on the other end in mint condition, I fought for that one) Here's a picture of it.

If you want some good rolls.. there is a guy who sells them instead of an auction and I think he sells them for 5.95 a roll of something. His Seller's name is Cubs-Fan.

I bought three and had such good luck with them I bought three more.

    Hi,
It was indeed due to the die being worn. Also, I am not sure that you have a repunched mintmark, a better closeup would be needed.

Marshall...you are talking about something called a clashed die and that is not the case here.

What was shown is common on cents minted in 1955 and going back, it is fairly common on cents of the '20s and '30s.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Repunched Mint Mark

I didn't post any of the repunched mint marks. What is up there is the (what appears ) " 1 " under Lincoln's Chin in two if the pictures.

Here is some of the repunched mint marks.

    The 4th picture is a double-stamped eyelid.

Very Nice! They are interesting finds! When you get a bunch of them from the same roll that makes the find even better:)

    have Fun,
