I have got this '55 cent with many errors on it, what do you think? -cracked die edge to skull area -cracked die under Lincoln -double date 55? Thanks.
Die cracks on Lincoln's forehead, a nice die crack below him, die deterioration doubling for the rest.
Am having difficulty seeing the bottom of the coin . . . but thought it might possibly be a 'retained cud' because of the way the 'crack' extends over the rim.
http://coinworld.com/Articles/ViewArticle/retained-cud-dianostics-sometimes-leave-room-for-doubt I'm not sure if this link is correct, but Mike Diamond has an article in Coin World .. Retained Cud Diagnostics .. date 1-10-11 and/or 1-24-11 . . online. If this is not a retained cud . . . would appreciate someone explaining why.
Usually retained cuds need to have more vertical displacement than just the crack. I wouldn't quite call this one a retained cud, but it probably turned into one later in the die's life.
the way I see this it is a late stage crack / early stage retained cud. The die has split enough that the rim no longer lines up properly but has not yet detached completely.
