Was someone very careful to not hairline the fields or did this happened to Jeff's check and nose and to Monticello at the mint?
Interesting. To me it looks like: -- as cpm9ball said, "... someone was trying to clean it up a bit ....", or -- mis-handled (I only see the lines on the devices; the fields look untouched), or -- poorly stored.
...attempt to buff gone wrong...the decision to buff was the first mistake, using a dirty or used or incorrect buffing pad was the second...imo...Spark
I got it cheap (looking for the receipt), but didn't notice the damage until recently when looking at the photos...
Still looking for the receipt. I am sure I could. I might hang onto it depending on exactly how much I paid for it.
It might not be worth it to return the coin. It could also be used as a reminder or an educational piece. Best wishes.
Looks to me like someone slid it across a course surface, turned it over and repeated it. Only the hit point got the damage. What a shame.
