Hi Everyone, First post here, I have a UNC 1954 $2 Replacement Note very low serial, just wondering what people think it is worth, realistic price. I have attached a scan of the note. Thanks! -Devin
Welcome to Coin Talk! Your *O/G $2 is one of the common ones with 320,000 printed. For a low serial number to have a premium it would have to be below 100 before anyone would take notice. The centering on the obverse is poor but the overall condition looks excellent, no folds, bumps or tears (that I can see in the scan). For value I would say $40 - $50.
Thanks I am new to collecting so just trying to learn. Is there any good reading on Canadian Bills. So because of the * that means it is a replacement note, only used if one is ruined during printing? also trying to figure out what the O/G prefix means exactly. I do appreciate the help! -Devin
The prefix is a control for numbering a series. Beginning in 1954 the prefix was in fraction form with the upper letter as the series number. The series consisted of 10 million notes. The lower number was used to to indicate the denomination. The prefix is changed by the Canadian Banknote Company and the change is not given before hand. That is, the prefixes don't follow each other alphabetically. In the current series we have the three letter prefix in use. They are also different for different denominations. "AAA" for example is being used for $5 and only $5's. I use the Charlton Standard Catalogue "Canadian Government Paper Money" for my reference. Pm sent.
