    Worn/overused dies.

    A common effect, especially on
    Lincoln Cents in the 1940's & 50's.

    After striking a few hundred thousand
    coins or so, with about 65-70 tons of
    pressure, you get this effect on the dies
    themselves.

    More of an anomaly than an error, and they
    do not carry any numismatic error premium
    to them- they're still easily found.
