1953s, 1953d lincoln penny

    Here are two different types. My question is about mintmarks, is it still inthe range in the 1953s? The 1954, the 5 is filled in. What is that called?

    The filled 5 is known as a die chip, which is a very small die break.
    The S mintmark of this era was punched by hand, so there is quite a bit of variation in the placement.

    Thanks for the help. When did they stop doing this type of handstamping the mintmarks?

    Around 1990, the US Mint standardized the font and size of the Mint Mark, making the Mint Mark a part of the template or hub from which the dies are made. It is now all one process.

    Technically it;s called a clogged 5 which is just a die chip
