Hi guys, I have this 1952 S Lincoln Wheat Penny and noticed on the Reverse a large indent almost in the center. Would this be considered a strike through error?
What is the determining factor whether this is a strike through or PMD? This is what I would like to learn.
This looks typical of a struck through grease with a crater effect. However, I'm seeing raised metal along the edges, so I'm at PMD unless someone can definitively say otherwise and explain.
Most common struck throughs will be flat with the surface, grease, thread, cloth because of the striking pressure pushing it into the coin. However this may not always happen with a foreign object like a large chip of metal.
I would say, yes as there is no damage to the obverse. A large piece of debris could have easily been on the die at the time it was minted. The way the metal was displaced is consistent in my opinion.
All of our suppositions could be correct, no way of truly knowing. But ponder this one aspect of the 1950s and you will smell what I’m stepping in: BB guns were very popular back then. Even in the 60s I confess to having laid aim to a few pennies, not just BB guns, but pellet guns and putting on train tracks. This looks exactly like a BB gun result…imo…Spark
