1952 Franklin. What's up with the 2?

Machine doubling.

 

Don't think I've seen it that extreme before.

Why is the bottom on the 2 up so far, and cut off? Or is that an illusion?
It appears to be a different design, no?

Thanks for the clarification. The doubling above the bottom of the 2 is what was throwing me off.

 

I'm not really sure I'm correct. I wonder if the date punch had this feature and it was transferred to the die. I don't understand how MD can be this bold in one tiny spot.
