Hello and thanks for your time in advance! I have a 1951 D Wheat penny here that has some very strange markings around the rim. I was told by a store collector that these were not cuts but happend in the mint. He said he thought it was an "extreme" case of finning? He also recommend me to take it to a dealer who specializes in errors for further review. The coin is in rough shape but very interesting to say the least. Any infor would be greatly appreciated.

Did this guy make you an offer? I'm guessing no. Find a new guy. It didn't come from the mint in that condition. It's post mint damage, someone used some kind of scissors like cutting device on the edge of this coin. No jackpot there, Maverick.

If those marks happened at the mint, then someone took a pair of wire cutters, scissors, or similar into the mint. Those marks have no relation what-so-ever to do with the minting process.

Well, I can tell you this much... that "store collectoer" knows NOTHING about coins or the minting process, lol.
