What do you guys think of this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/360422045250?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_500wt_1186 I've been watching this and one side tells me to gamble and try to nab it, another side keeps telling me to not bother. It looks appealing but the pictures are perfectly clear to me, being in a 2x2 fold over. It doesn't appear to be cleaned or polished but it looks like it has potential on the FS on the reverse. If it goes cheap though, I'll likely gamble. Just wanted other thoughts. I've been on a early Jefferson Nickel kick lately, I managed to nab a nice MS66 '38 D the other day for about half it's going value.
That's a good price with 30 mins left in the auction. Steps look pretty full, but there appear to be some significant hits on Jeff's chin and jaw that are not likely to be on the flip. But even though, $12 for this Unc 50-D is a deal. That's AU pricing.
id say a ms 64+, but i notice it has scaring on the jaw line. and a few bag marks so that makes me 64, but its nice for a raw coin.. id buy it .. even thos i dont like buying raw coins that often
Yeah, I was thinking the same. Regardless of that, if 64 is around the ballpark grade, yeah, $11 or $12 I think is a great price for a key date low mintage with what appears to be full steps.
Oh, I don't send coins off to get graded, especially ones that are of lower value. What appeals to me most is the potential full steps (which raises the value a little) and the low mintage key date. That's what I'm aiming for. Most of the slabbed ones I came across, seems they're starting price was way off.
I nabbed it, for end result price of $15.50. Seems the previous bidder put in a max amount of $15. We will see how good it is once I have it in my possession.
Why on earth would you slab a 50-D? Low mintage, maybe... key date, definitely not! This date is readily available in MS grades and about 1 in 10 coins will have 5 FS. Now, if you can find a 6 FS coin, that's the only one worth grading IMHO unless you're talking MS-68 or so. What some collectors don't know is that this particular date/mm combination was released at a time when coin collectors were stashing coins away by the roll and they knew that this mintage was going to be small, so almost all of them were hoarded rather than circulated. I personally believe that the 2009-P Jeffersons will suffer much the same fate. Very few will circulate and years from now the only condition you'll ever see them in is MS. People will have them for sale, but always at a premium (however small it will be).
I think that's why they had the issh part, as in, don't send it off to get slabbed. Well, to me, I said key date because by far it is the lowest minted year/mint of any of the Jefferson nickels so far. Like I said, even if I found a 6 FS MS68 one and it wasn't slabbed/graded already, I wouldn't send it off to get graded. It has to be really really valuable, rare and perhaps if I wanted to make sure it was authentic to actually get a coin from my collection graded and slabbed by some grading service. I'm well aware but I wanted it because I don't have one. Don't take the fun out of collecting. Maybe, maybe not but there will always be 37,209,970 more 2009-P's out there than a 1950-D. I think I did good on the end price though of this. Like I said previously, most of the one's I've seen for sale are starting at or over the PCGS and NGC current values.
Its a nice raw coin, and that price is well within reason. I have 4 or 5 of them...a couple raw I got for about 10 bucks that are 64-65, and 2 slabbed 65's that I got for around 16 bucks with nice toning. Not a bad buy at all.
I'm not trying to take the fun out of collecting and by your wink, I think you realize that, but what I am trying to tell you is that nice 50-Ds are NOT hard to come by. Personally, I wouldn't look for one on eBay. many dealers have a roll that you can find a nice one in and you can see it in hand before you purchase. IMHO the ones you'll find on eBay are not as nice quality-wise and overpriced due to shipping costs, etc. I also think that shrek may have saved you time and money by selling you one, he generally has a pretty decent eye. You might ask him to show you what he has for sale anyway. That said, there's no right or wrong, there's only fun and not fun. Collect as you wish.
