http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/5299/sdime0060pk.jpg My girlfriend brought this home today from change at the store. Its a 1949s roosevelt. Under the 9 is the letter s. anyone ever seen this before??(not this one but..you know what I mean) Its well circulated but why would this extra s escaped the many prying eyes over the years?? let alone escape being #2 lowest mint for the silver roosevelts??

Did not the mintmarks in those years appear on the reverse?

The mintmarks are on the reverse. As Roy said, it is probably an optical illusion, caused by metal flow and/or damage/wear.

http://img386.imageshack.us/img386/2342/sdime0065ao.jpg Yes your probably right?? The mintmark is on the back of this coin. It is an s. I'm not trying to make this an s by saying it is under the 1 in the date! This is a 1949s with the s being on the reverse of the coin where it belongs. I only photo the front of the coin because thats where The question was pointing to. I'm not wondering if I can make this an s if I illusion it to be under the 1 in the date. it is an s according to the reverse. Phew!! Just wondering if it could be a result of the designers initials? with an s being so close to the s under the 1 in the date I find it hard to believe it's an illusion. Is the extension of the 6, cleanly broke, an illusion also? Thanks, Delusional:rolling: David
