What coins were minted in Japan in 1949 and what coins were circulating during that year. Also where can I find a coin set for that year?

1949 or Showa Year 24 (昭和二十四年) was not a very exciting year for Japanese coins. I don't think that you will find a coin set from that year, I'm not sure that any were even made, though I don't know 100% for sure.

According to the JNDA, the only 3 circulating coins produced in that year were:

    1 Yen Brass (mintage of all years 1958 - 1950: 451 million)
5 Yen Brass "Chicken Yen" (mintage: 179 million)
5 Yen Brass Kaisho Lettered (1st year of currently circulating 5 yen coin) (mintage: 111 million)

All are fairly common and inexpensive.

I don't know the answer to which coins were circulating that year, but that was also during the post WWII American Occupation of Japan and I think they issued Occupied bank notes as well.

The first Japan Mint sets IIRC were from 1969ish, and frequently are green with pvc.
