Does anyone know why there are 2 different types or size of the mint mark for the 1948 S Nickel ?

Because all mintmarks were hand struck into the dies at the branch mints, and they had different size punches? That is always the explanation I have heard.

If you go to varietyvista.com you can click on mint mark styles as a way to compare the different types . Also sometimes the mm was applied upside down. That makes the mm look different also. But check out that site lots of good and free information there.
