1948 Jefferson Nickel is this a die crack?

    No that's actually a Planchet issue called a Lamination Crack.

    It has nothing to do with the Die that struck the coin.
    A Die crack would be on the Die itself so when it strikes the blank planchet the metal flows into the crack/void then appear raised on the surface.

    Lamination errors on older nickels seem to be more frequent than other coins and yours is a good example.

    It's not a Die crack. Its a Lamination crack.
    There's a difference. Did you read the earlier responses?
