Can anyone guess what is wrong with this 1947-D NGC MS65 5FS Jefferson Nickel?

I see it! But I'll let others have a chance to spot it.

I will say this, that is the beginning of the journey, not the end.

As pretty as it is, the hard hit is such that I could not call it 5FS.

Every step is broken by the contact mark/hit. Not even a 1FS.

    Agree, sadly.

Besides the steps being broken, there is something wrong with the holder...

Now that you mention it, the reverse edge looks like what happens when I crack out a coin for my albums.

Could this be a crackout, then substitute an inferior coin, put the holder back together, and send the original back to get an additional MS65 5FS? Then you would have two coins at that grade instead of just one.

That would be an interesting scam that I would never think of. Except I guess I just did think of it. :grumpy::grumpy:

It would not make sense to do that since the coin in this grade is barely worth the cost of grading (it's probably a $30 coin). And if you step one grade up, it still isn't an expensive coin (an MS 66 5FS sold on ebay for $75 earlier this month).

That is the only thing that I saw...so will be following along for the answer.
