When I was at the coinshow on Sunday I noticed these 2 wheaties not because of their condition but what I saw underneath Lincoln's Chin. These pictures should be quite large and hopefully you wont have trouble seeing what I am referring too. Click on the photo to increase it's size...still not as large as I originally had them :/ It's quite clear on the 46-p. I want to say it looks like a strike thru from the letter "U" or "N" in United. It's definitely not a nick/stratch because there is nothing indented or separating and the line is perfectly straight. Unlike the 46, the 49 only shows 1 line/strike underneath Lincoln's Chin. Could be something else? Thanks
I am pretty sure you U N line is s a die scratch. Pretty sure that line is raised. Those lines under the chin, I cannot tell. Are they raised or incused?
Dick, the line is not raised, it is level to the rest of the flat surface on the obverse..Immediately inbetween both lines that is located underneath the chin is definitely incused. Another way I could explain this is comparing it an inground pool, does that give a better picture?
After a little more research, I think you and RLM are correct. It looks more like a die clash then a struck through. Just so that I can make a note of it in my log, Die clashes do not add a lot of value, do they?
Not much, but people do try to build sets...I see coins with clash marks like this go for $1-$3 bucks, so not much of a premium especially at MS grades.
