1946 dime

    Anyone know info?? It a lighter then any other dime and the pitch is higher when dropped. I do if that matters or not 20160907_173856.jpg 20160907_174003.jpg

    The pitch when dropped is because it is 90% silver and 10% copper. This was true until 1964. In 1965, the composition of silver coins was changed to cupronickel (75% copper and 25% nickel.
    Your coin is pretty well beat up and has no value above melt, currently about $1.43. It might be less due to the wear.
    Still a nice find, though.

    Agreed, it's a silver coin. Next time, just can just look at the side of the dime to see if it has silver, or remember that 1964 and earlier dimes were made of silver :)

    Well. for starters, quit dropping it! Treat old coins with care! The US Mint produced silver coinage for circulation through 1964! 40% silver Kennedy halves through 1970.

    It is 90% silver. Nice find.

    That "D" to the left of the torch is a mintmark, and it signifies that the coin was made in Denver.
