So I thought this coin looked weird... It’s definitely a 1945-D. BUT... (1) I thought the D was over a P at first... but Philadelphia didn’t mint this coin and even if it did, there would be no mintmark. (2) I could make out two serifs at the top of the D... that made me think it was an M as that could be possible because the Manila mint did make this coin from 1937-41. But the Manila M is a bit different I think? (3) So I looked at the last two digits of the date... but the 4 doesn’t look like anything but a 4. The 5 might be over a 3 or an 8... or a 7? but there’s no 1943. So maybe it’s a 1938 or 1937 with a faint 3? I can’t tell really. Any thoughts?
Well let's throw this out there.....ok 3 known RPM's, if you look them up you'll see that they are pretty drastic punches. Also durring this time peroid the U.S. mint had turned out several mint marks inverted, horzonal.....since the mint did in fact mint these possibilities? Needless to say yes the die had wear ,and I'm sure the mint was filling orders. www.varietyvista.com has images of all 3 rpms
Thanks!!! Do you think that this would be a 1945 D/D then? That would explain the U shape inside the D (and why I figured it wasn't over an S) That also explains why it didn't look like the Manila mark. The only thing I'm wondering though is that the serif at the top right... would indicate that it's a backwards D... yet the U indicates a D facing down... So could this be a D/D/D (Regular, Downward, Backwards)? I have another one I will post on a thread that's confusing me also if you don't mind looking at it - I'm still confused about my Polish coins.
