Hello. What are your thoughts on this merc? I've provided close-ups... This coin was saved in a booklet from my grandfather from like the 60's, and he had really bad eyesight, especially towards the end...but he did think this had a doubled date. The mintmark also looks doubled...but if you pro's could let me know your thoughts that would rock. Thanks!
*bump* Can someone please help me to understand my OP? Is this coin worth anything more than scrap silver value? I know it's not the best condition but I am trying to learn about errors, MD, etc. Anyone?
Looks like no one else wants to volunteer do I will give it a try. I can not see anything in your photos because we would need a close up for this. it is more than likely to be one or the other of the worthless forms of doubling like say mechanical doubling for example.this is really common on coins and a lot of folks can not understand the difference between a real doubled die coin and MD.
The image makes me think it's strike doubling of some type. Some collect these but pay little or nothing over the silver value. It cool to find stuff like this and have the chance to take a good look at it. The one you posted is priceless because of it's family history. There is a site about all the different types of doubling but I lost the link. Someone will come along and post it.
This may help as there a few die varieties known for that date & coin. I not telling you to buy for them but the <>book you can find any coin shop. :kewl: http://www.amazon.com/Cherrypickers-Guide-Varieties-United-States/dp/0794820530
