Here's what looks to me like a lamination crack on the reverse of a 1944S LWP. How it completely separated the lower left leg of the A in America, though, is beyond me...
I can see the crack and I have no doubts that’s it’s from a lamination issue. However I also see a gouge in the field just above the lower portion of the wheat ears lower stalk going towards (into) the lower portion of the first A in AMERICA. It appears to me this is from a hit that pushed the metal towards the lower leg in the A. It also looks like that is the area that the lamination crack stopped.
I believe that is a continuation of the lamination. Sorry, didn't take snaps all the way down, finishing up here:
Hmm, so I guess damage to the A at the point of the lamination could move that lower leg. Sounds reasonable. It's probably even easier to slide parts of it over since it's on top of the separation.
Yeah, there's another one. BTW, do you see how the lam disturbs these devices, this N and this T? It's not nearly as extreme as the disturbance in your other one, but you can make it out, the drop-off. Good eye. Nice find.
That's a good point. I can see how a lamination can easily move surface area over, even without apparent damage - just simple wear.
