Been doing some sorting and I always keep my 44D for "future" inspection. This one jumped out at me so I'm looking for opinions. Will try to get better pics tomorrow but need some advice from the experts on this one http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0001-13.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/scan0002-11.jpg http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/ds.jpg Thanks, clembo
It COULD be a 1944 D/S Rpm #2, the less scarce one. The expensive version, Rpm #1 has a pronounced "horn" poking out of the top of the D, but it does look to me to be the #2 D/S. Of course, hit coppercoins.com and post us some macros of you could.... I keep every 44-D aside as well for the same reason, and have found a DDO, I will post at a later date when I can get better macros
Here's a somewhat better pic. The S is a bit left of the D. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x275/clembo1872/ds1-1.jpg
Unfortunately, I don't think that this is a D/S. I had the good fortune to find one once, the #2, and "in-hand" it is a surprisingly distinct OMM. The left side of the D will have a pronounced horn and there are distinct undermarks where the S was. I sold it for $90 on Ebay, and wish I had it back.
I have several #2's and I have to agree with mike. From your pics it is just too hard to tell if there is anything there. It should be pretty obvious since on mine the horn is almost as high as the D. The coin I show here would be considered a stage C. You can also see a secondary hook off the bottom of the D.
I think there is the "horn/hook" poking out of the left side, under the foreign debris....my opinion is to clean the gunk off and get a better look. Never had one in hand
If the hook can't be confirmed at the mm there may be another marker to look for on the OMM#2. According to the book "The RPM Book", Lincoln Cents by James Wiles, Ph.D, regardless of die stage there should be a die crack from the bust to the rim east or west of VDB depending on stage.
I appreciate all the help guys. I'm convinced it is a D/S. Wish I could get better pics but here's what I see. To the left of the D at the top is the curl of the S. The "blob" at the bottom is where I have problems getting pics. It's the serif of the S. No doubt in my mind. Looks better under a 16x loupe than my QX3.
. I am guessing that they are 2 seperate die cracks appearing at different die states. Coins, unlike humans, are allowed to have more than 1 die crack. From the book.....
