    It looks like copper to me. What does it weigh and does it stick to a magnet?

    It's either plated or counterfeit. If it were a steel cent, it should weigh 2.8 grams as opposed to a copper cent that should weigh 3.11 grams.

    people would also coat these with mercury.

    look at that picture, you can see the copper. Somebody plated it with zinc, I think.
