Hi, I just wanted to show this penny I just found. I had this penny for years in a jar of wheaties and didn't realize it was an error. I remember looking at it a couple of years ago and thinking it was drizzled redish paint. I tried to scratch it off with my thumb nail this evening while looking through the jar. It was dirty so I washed it in water, I know your not supposed to mess with them. Anyway just showing to see what you all think, just keep looking, they are around! I have 5 major errors and several minor errors that I have found in my pocket change. Also another 44 that looks like damage caused by a person but it also has a cracked die, I think. Look at cud above God it goes really get around rim and below liberty.
Well your 44 it appears that something has been spilt on it I'm not into cleaning coins but with that (acetone bath).JMO Your 44 D might be a small Cud but I'm no cud expert let's see what others think. Dave
Everything on the 1944 looks like gunk stuck on the coin. Run it under slow moving hot water and I bet it comes off. Also, the 1944-D could be a cud, but it looks more like a rim hit. Could you take a photo of the edge of the coin where that lump is? @ldhair
The 1944 is all post mint damage. Just some dirt and gunk on the surfaces. Soak it in 100% acetone for some time and it'll probably come off. As for the 1944-D, that could either be a cud (which happens at the mint) or a rim hit (which is post mint damage.) Could you get some close up, in focus pictures of the area in question from the top, and side pictures of the rim?
There's no red paint (or any paint) in the Minting process. And if there was, it wouldn't be blobbed up like that but flatten like a pancake by tons of pressure. Paint/finger nail polish squishes a lot sooner than metal. So definitely damage afterwards some time. Red finger nail polish maybe ?
