Is it possible that a D could be here? Or, just damage that looks like a D? My guess, damage that looks like a D... thanks...
Never really heard of a stray mint mark. Makes Me want to check all of my 1914 and 1909 Vdb lincolns;p
It is not a "stray mint mark". Philadelphia does not have stray Denver mint marks running around. That being said, it sure looks like a "D" to me. Being raised means that something hit the die, but I have no idea what that something could have been. Maybe Mike Diamond has a guess.
Looks post mint damage. If it were a dropped letter it would be incuse so let's rule that out. Anyone got a way of overlaying a 'D' mint mark next to that odd shape to see what it's size is?
Not that I know as much as you guys, which I am pretty sure I do not, re: coins anyway. The mark looks to new to be a stray "D" strike when compared to the other normal wear and tear of the coin, almost like a possible forgery attempt to make it look like a missed strike. (?) At no fault of the poster.
Its damage, you can see a small line of damage leading up and to the left starting at the upper left part of the mark. Focus on areas larger than the perceived anomaly and many of these things are easy to work out. Thanks, Bill
It's raised... I have looked at this a million times, MOST of the time I can see a D. But, A LOT of the times I turn it just right and it looks like a gouge. So, I'm going with the gouge because it makes sense ( I should list this on e-bay as one of a kind mis-placed mint mark for $125,000.00) JUST KIDDING! rockdude wanted a 1944 "D" placed next to it, so I did do that in the attached image. So, back into the anomalies pile it goes and back to searching... Thanks
That is what I thought I was seeing. Now, if it is raised, can someone please explain to me how that can be post mint damage?
im a still new at this but i ran across the same thing on a wheat cent and posted it, turns out it was a gas bubble that popped.maybe this is the case here.
I'm just making this up as I go along, but the inside of the "D" seems to be incursive. This crater could provide material to raise the rim of the gouge that was caused by a "D" shaped something? Like I said, I'm just guessing.
Could be made from anything. Alot of coins have gouges and dents in them. Its like looking at clouds and finding shapes, the mind tends to make shapes to rationalize.
First, is it incused? dollar, you still there? Second, can it raise the rim on all 4 sides? I cannot find any ding on a coin that raised any side unless it scraped the coin. That results in the raising of one side or possibly 2, 3 doubtful, but how all 4?
