1944-D PCGS MS66FS I purchased this off of ebay a few weeks ago and just want to know if I did ok or if I got "taken to the cleaners." My latest price guide (June 2004) has a 1944-D 65FS listed at $30.00. I bought this one for $22.00 plus $4.00 shipping and insurance. I know I got hosed on the shipping and insurance but that is par for the course. I actually meant to bid on another nickel with gold toning instead of this one. Thanks for your input.
$4.00 shipping and insurance is not unreasonable, especially considering the deal you got on the coin.
Jefferson nickels are getting more expensive every day. A well struck, high grade 1944-D is always a desireable piece. Personally, I'm not into slabbing or TPGS, nor have I ever sold a coin, (I've given away many over the years, though) but I have to say that when you consider the ease of resale, the apparent high quality of the coin in question, and the relatively low purchase price, it sounds to me as if you got a great deal on your Jefferson nickel. Congratulations on your silver nickel, and I hope you will consider collecting many more dates/MM's in the future.
Thanks Jody. I am working on a collection of war year nickels. After posting this thread on 5-30, I purchased two additional nickels. I had the opportunity to bid on another 1944-D PCGS MS66FS nickel and lost out during the final few minutes of the auction on ebay. I did pick up a 1945-P PCGS Benson MS66 nickel for $24.55 and also got a 1960 PCGS MS67 with blue toning for $37.10. I am a sucker for toning, I guess. The nickels are good buys considering what one must fork over to acquire rare Morgan Dollars or St. Gaudens. Is it ok to post ebay auction links? I've seen others post them but wasn't sure if it was something the administrator and moderators encouraged or not. Also, Jody. While lurking on this forum several months ago, someone made a reference to a story you have about collecting nickels. Do you mind sending me to the thread where I can read this story? Oh and one last thing... What is some background regarding the Benson collection? What are the important details to know about the Benson collection? Thanks.
Hi,GoldEagle. Sorry for the delay in responding to your post. I work out of town, and don't get to check in as much as I used to. I see you are still adding to your Jefferson collection. I think that's wonderful. I also see that you have added a toned nickel to your collection. They are nice, and can often be some of the more beautiful examples in one's set. I know I have quite a few of the various toned types, and some of them are very striking indeed. About the Benson Collection; I don't have a lot of info on that, other than to tell you that it was a very famous and extensive collection of coins that was assembled during the 30's and 40's. Your attributed coin, was apparantly once part of that collection. Can you post links to eBay auctions? I believe so. I have been doing it, and nothing has been said about it. You have to remember that this is Jason Taylor's forum and is being hosted by Peter Davis. Those two gentlemen have the final say on what can be posted. Sorry, I can't recall the story about collecting nickels. I can tell you that I have been collecting Jefferson nickels since the early 60's. I collect both from dealers, as well as from circulation. When I have the time, I buy an entire box ($100.00) from the bank, and search it for "keepers". I have thousands of nickels. Some are not worth much, some are rather valuable, but I have enjoyed collecting every one of them. One of my posts, that others have commented on, is: LINK TO POST (click here) Good luck with your coins, and keep us informed on how you're doing. ~Jody~
Feel free to post links to any auctions or other pertinant web sites. Just keep it numismatically related and don't go overboard with any self promotions.
Thanks Jody for sharing that with me and the rest of the forum. In this, sometimes very materialistic world, your experience helps to put things in their proper perspective.
