Going through and photographing my existing Date/MM collection, this one caught my eye. Originally dismissed as the usual shelfing, but upon further examination... Tell me those aren't split serifs! OK, so I know I'm new at this... But I've been reading these threads obsessively since I joined (which happened because I picked up a POS USB scope. I can't seem to find a match to the variety. I'll post more pictures in a minute once I transfer them.
I think what you have is retouching of the design, which was present on nearly all 1944 cents. It was first thought to be master die doubling, but is now thought to be a product of engraving in the master die. http://error-ref.com/Retouching_the_date.html
Interesting... something I hadn't run across yet. Seems to match pretty well. A bit of wind out of the sails, but thanks non_cents!
