Yes, it is real. They were made in 1943 to replace the copper that was needed for the war effort during world war 2. They're not worth much but nonetheless a very cool find in circulation, especially one in such a good condition.
@Bobby Ramirez To check the 1943 Steel Cent you take a magnet and carefully bring it toward the Cent. If it sticks then it's real... Obviously since this is the only US coin made that sticks to a magnet.
