I was looking thru E-Bay and found a 1943 s nickel on a steel penny planchet for sale It was a certified coin so you can be pretty sure it is the real thing I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of this? I know that this does happen but I have never seen it happen on a steel penny planchet before

Hi, and welcome to the forum.
Certified by whom? There are plenty of bottom feeders putting coins in slabs with "certifications" that aren't worth the plastic in the slab.

Can you either post the pictures of both sides from the auction, or a link to the auction? (My search for it was unsuccessful. :( )

My problem with believing in the coin you are talking about is that the planchet is smaller than the die which supposedly hit it. If that were to really happen, the resulting coin should definitely be broadstruck, as the nickle collar wouldn't have kept the cent planchet from expanding horizontally when hit with tons of pressure.

Your question on how many is hard to say...there could be 1---there could be lots...the mint doesn't make errors for the fun of it...they make errors bacause they mess up...so there is no telling how many are out there.....

    Now how to post link....

When you go to the page up below your "Back" button there is a long place with an address that should start with www. or http://www.---click once on the address so it is highlighted and then right click and you will have a drop down menu and one thing will be "copy"....click that...come to this page and when you post...right click again and click on "Paste" and it should paste your address.

Yep it worked....as you see...the auction I showed was from a guy named Mike Byers...and in the auction you showed...he is the high bidded.

Hey Roy...I guess when the die hit the planchet the coin did get bigger but not any bigger than the nickel collar....it seems to be the size of a nickel...

BTW....I would trust ANACS...I think the coin is real.

The combination of an ANACS certification, and Mike Byers' bid convince me. ;)

After all, Mike is one of the experts I suggested that another poster should consult about an error coin. :)

Yup I agree with Roy, Mike is a good guy and knows his stuff. I've sold him some errors in the past.
