I found this penny in a roll of nickels at work. The scan does not do it justice as far as coloration goes. It has the same shinyness of any of our silver change. So is it a re-po? someone shine it up? or has it been previously un circulated?

Given that any ideas on the grade of this coin... Assuming it's real.

Its a 1943 Steel Cent....and BTW...uless your talking about before 1965 we don't have any silver change.

I'll say the grade is AU....but I'm not sure what that indent is below the date....is that damage?

I think the indent is nothing more than the front of Lincoln's coat.

But then again, someone could call it a "speared" Lincoln and send it in for grading. You pay your money and take your chances.

I disagree...the coat doesn't go like that....it looks at first look like a clip BUT its not all the way through the planchet so I don't think that is right.

Just wanted to make everything plain ;--)

    AU stands for Almost Uncirculated.

    Great...no damage....worth about 5 cents!!

Its AU...when a coin is AU it has some luster...most likely someone had this back since 1943 and just spent it since its not worth $$$$$$.....or it could be cleaned but I don't see it.

If it is as shiny as the OP describes, it is likely that it isn't original luster, but more likely it has been replated.

startrek91481-Many 1943 cents have been replated with zinc since this replaces the "shininess" on the coin. The easy give-away for replating is when you find a 43 with great luster and ANY wear. These coins tarnish amazingly quickly so by the time there is wear then it has tarnished (and is no longer shiny).

My guess is that is what you have.

I got to thinking...what do they call the 43 cents they work on....re-processed or something like that...I have heard that when they do that it makes them shiny...

Nah I already knew it wasn't worth much... It's really cool coin from one of the era's that most interests me.
