1943 penny

    I found a 1943 penny, that looks the color of a dime. Can you tell me what it is worth?

    it is worth about 5 cents unless it is in original (uncleaned and unplated) condition, in which case it may be worth a few dollars. If you could post photos we could help you more.

    1943 US cents were made from zinc-plated steel to save copper for the war effort. Zinc tarnishes to a very dark gray, and if your coin really looks silvery it is either
    • "Reprocessed" - a euphemism for damaged by replating - worth a tenth of a dime on a good day [​IMG]
    • A relatively scarce untarnished original surface coin - probably removed from Daddy's collection to buy candy - worth quite a bit more [​IMG]

    They are pretty easy to tell apart, so post a picture and get some opinions. :D

    1943 steel penny, not really steel but it is zinc plated in order to save copper during WWII.
