I actually purchased this coin about 6 months ago from a lot someplace on the Internet. Bought it basically because it was AU/UNC and cheap. While removing it from the old 2x2 I decided to check the mint mark a little more closely. Sure enough, this is what I noticed:

Is this the 1943D-1MM-004 that is shown here? It looks similar but the second D on mine is more to the right than what Copper Coins shows. That and I see a similar effect on the 3.

I'm often wrong when it comes to errors, but since the effect is visible on the mint mark, the 3, the 4 & the 9, and it appears to be flat and shelf like in appearance - I would be inclined to think it is the result of mechanical doubling.

  5. Did you look for the markers as they were described on coppercoins? Like the die crack on the forehead and shoulder. Also a rather large one on the reverse.

Must of missed that, where do you see the die markers listed?

  7. When you click on the link it takes you to a page which lists different 1943 D varieties. I am assuming we are looking at the 4th one down from the top, 1943 D 1MM-004?

Next to the pic it says marker photos : EDS. Click on EDS. Then on the left hand side are all the die stage markers. This one has only EDS or early die stage markers. It also has some pics to look at.

    Hope this helps,

    Michael

Thank you so much! I had a few people ask me about die markers and I always responded "huh?". Now I know!

Probably some of the most helpful information I've received. Always been a Lincoln fan but lately I've become almost obsessed with them, especially the varieties. I've went through about 600 of my nearly 1500 pre-1982 cents over the past week looking for varieties. Haven't found one yet but it's very fun.

On closer examination my coin does not have any of the markers listed on Copper Coins. Oh well......

Can you take a picture of the coin so that the entire obverse is showing. I don't want to say anything definitive, but the coin looks reprocessed. That means tha it may have been replated. I cant tell from this picture. That kind of doubling is common on reprocessed coins so I would really be interested in seeing a full picture of the obverse.
The texture is a little wrong on the surface.

    Have Fun,
    Bill

It might be reprocessed, or it may be die erosion doubling. I do not believe it to be mechanical doubling.

Definately strike doubling, look at the flat shelf like appearance to the 3 and the D.
Besides, the D was added after the die was preped.
So, the D would be a RPM (repunched mintmark).
