I have a 1943 D steel penny, it looks as if the D is a repunched mintmark. It also looks like some of the numbers may be doubling. I took it to a coin shop and he said it looks like machine doubling and was common. Does anyone know if this is true, could this be a repunched mintmark?
The numbers appear to be die deterioation due to over use to the East. The D does appear to be Machine Doubling. Rhubarb
1943 D/d I came across a penny that looks like mine. If you read in the description he says "This is the RPM #4 D/D Southeast". It is not graded that way. Here is the link, let me know what you think. http://cgi.ebay.com/1943-D-D-Lincol...eZWD1VQQtrksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem
money: Look at the mintmark of the new item that you psoted. See the size of the (under) mintmark? It is about the same size as the top one. Now, look at yours, as you may be able to see, it is actuaslly larger then the top one. (note that it is from before the left side (west) and extends past the end of the top mintmark to the right (east.) This is, I believe, a sign of strike doubling.
The one listed on ebay has a greater spread to the South and to the east as the one listed on Coppercoins. It is my opinion that it is as Treashunt has stated. The one listed on Ebay could be a EDS coin. Rhubarb
It depends on the market. Different book's have it listed at different prices. If it's a true Doubled Die I would value it at 20.00. Rhubarb
The post was directed at Oldman. Read his post. If it is a true D/D then that what I think its worth. Rhubarb
