It is time to put any suspicions to rest here and now. This coin has been in the family for a long time and I need your opinions as to What it is. It appears to be copper with a splash of steel, as if it were altered. However we all know that copper is rare so don't steer me wrong here. It is magnetic, pay attention to the mix pattern , it appears that the steel is bleeding onto the copper on the obverse. The reverse shows a spray type pattern (specals). Is this possible to alter in this way? or is it possible that it came from the mint this way? Is it possible that the batch of fresh steel was contaminated with copper residue? Give it to me straight and I welcome all opinions.
Very interesting, Possibly someones failed attempt to replate,, to be the famous 1943 copper cent. The cents would be stripped of the zinc plating and then replated with copper . Your cent appears to have had the zinc plating removed ,,
Digger Im just going by the overall tone of the coin, the dull grey color ,, if you have one of these laying around that is not in real good shape, try soaking it tarn X or a similar mild acid for an hour or two. That being said,, it may still have value, Might be worth having it authenticated, Iam just going by the pictures and a guess, since there were many of these done to try and capitolize on this extremely rare error.
I agree. Looks like someones not too successful attempt to copper plate a steel cent. Pretty neat, but I don't think it has much value.
I do have many steel pennies in rolls and some of them are rusting. I have no metal polish of any kind. While Im on this subject does anyone know if there are any errors to look for in the steel pennies. I still don't own any books yet.
1943-D double D is the only one that I know of Breen number 2169 but the chance of others still exists.
thanks metalman! I am fresh out of cirulated rolls to search, now I can check my 43's to keep busy. not planning to go to the bank soon as it is snowing and I live to far in the hills to venture to the city in this weather.
