Please forgive me if I am in the wrong forum, I am new to this. My brother found a 1943 copper penny, we presume it anyways, and he has taken it to 2 different places. One was a jeweler who also is a collector and the other one was a coin shop. He has gotten 2 different answer's so I thought I would try and find out more from some of you. The penny is definitely copper, no magnet sticks to it, but the coin shop said he couldn't verify it because of it's weight. This would be such a blessing for him but I'm not going to get my hopes up. Thanks in advance...

    Welcome to CT!

If the coin shop couldn't verify it because of it's weight, don't you think the weight might be of interest to us? But regardless, all I see says counterfeit

Fake! The rims look really off, and it doesn't look like the 95% copper alloy. Looks partly steel or some other metal.

Some of my pennies toned to the exact color, their 70,s pennies

I say this is right. But I can't tell to well since the lighting is weird.

My brother found this in the ground while he was metal detecting around an old house so he didn't come by it thru circulation. The coin shop thought that the 3 was a little too low and the weight should be 3.11 grams and this weighed 3.9 grams. They wanted to send it off to someone else but my brother was nervous about doing so. Thank you all for your opinions. I guess he will just hang on to it.

3.9 g - I 100% guarantee it is counterfeit. Not a prayer they made one that heavy.

If this coin will not stick to a magnet then there is a possibility that it may be the real thing. maybe ever who weighed it got the weight wrong. the coin sure looks good to me and it is not one of the usual altered 1948 cents. be sure and don't get rid of it until you learn what it is.

At 3.9g I am pretty much certain it is a fake. The coin also just does not look right.

In the ground? It could be some kind of rust. I know when dimes are in the ground for a while they turn brown.

My brother found a few other coins as well but when we started looking online we realized that it could be a rare penny. I don't know how deep they were when he found them. We are not experts with coins, he just does a lot of metal detecting. I just thought I would join the group to get some feedback on it for him because we weren't sure what to look for. I just don't want him being taken advantage of by the coin dealers in our area.

I agree with the others...that it doesn't look right and if it does in fact weigh 3.9g then it is fake for sure.

I'll bet the dealer wanted to send it to PCGS or NGC for grading and certification. These are grading and authenticating services and are considered the best in the business. They are safe to send it too...but they do change quite a fee. Based on the information we have here...this coin is almost guaranteed a fake and thus it likely isn't worth the money. But, you might want to seek out another dealers opinion (who can see it in hand).

well it's nicer than most fakes where the coin is just plated with copper, this was actually counterfeited, not plated!

Get it weighed again by someone you trust. Go to a School of any kind and use their calibrated scale.

First off hello alviah my name is marshall and im a coin buyer well first I see you have a laser microscope that's why your penny looks like steel its from the lights on it I see no one said anything about Double Die on the LIBERTY that coin should be looked at the cost is around 1500-2500 dollars if its real great if not you lost your money any ways that's why the rim looks like it does. Its a real nice coin good luck.

Sorry, but the coin is counterfeit. If you have a source that wants to buy counterfeit coins with "Double Die" (the correct term is doubled die, I believe) on the LIBERTY, I will make you as many as you can handle.
