Was hoping to find out about this 1942S Mercury dime I have. It has a very prominent double date. [Mostly just the 4 and the 2.]

I've not seen it mentioned in any books or other literature.

Thanks in advance for the help.
    Solid handshakes,
    Jason

Welcome to the forum Jason. If you can post some pictures, the experts here will tell you whether it is a double die or strike doubling.

Sounds like a great find regardless of what it is. As noted, try posting a photo. You may be rich with a rare find.

    1942S Mercury Dime Doubling Image

So scanning the thing proved harder than I thought but here is the result of several tries this evening:

[Not sure how to best upload or insert images here yet. The image file is online at: http://www.smartwentcrazy.com/images/1942smercury_dd.jpg]

Will try some steadier images with the camera if this isn't enough. And I do assure you of the 'S' mintmark. Scanning both sides tonight would have driven me insane.

    Thanks again for looking.

WOW! That's some picture. However, with the blur from the scanner, it's tought to tell on the doubling of the date. Post more pics, please (smaller, preferably)

Try it again. I just realized the GIANT size of the image file. Just now resized it.

The 4 and the 2 are the main areas that are VERY doubled. The scan, admittedly awful, does sort of reflect that part though. But yeah, will work on better methods for creating images tonight/tomorrow.

On that note, any suggestions for taking photos or scanning coins?

From what I can see - it looks like it might be mechanical doubling.

To get clearer pics with the scanner try scanning at a higher resolution.

You may want to take a closer look at the base of the neck, the top of the hair and at the left of the R in liberty. Looks to have the same thing going on there too.

Yeah I see it - but I can't tell from the pics if that is mechanical doubling or not for sure. But Jason can with the coin in hand. Is the edge of that doubled area flat and sharp or rounded over ?

The overlayed 4 and the 2 are probably more rounded than flat. The 2 has a nice rounded top tip. In comparing mine to the image in the latest Red Book I see a very strong similarity to the 1942D 2 over 1.

Still, I'm SO new to all of this stuff and will, most assuredly, have to do some more research. I've been reading over a lot of the stuff on this site and will hopefully figure it out.

Will also try and get better scans up since I know that I am struggling even with the thing right in front of me.

Thanks again for all of the input.
