I bought a large part of my Grandfather's collection from my brother this weekend since he has little interest in collecting. I have a TON of stuff to go though. I found this one tonight and thought I'd share. There's some nice luster under the toning. What do you think about the grade?
The right field hit and the black mark are there. In hand the hit isn't as distracting as the black mark. This was in one of those ancient 2x2's....I have a bunch more along with stuff he wrapped in Saran wrap.
Thad, except for the scratch behind his head, and that black mark, it's a nice looking coin. Could go 63/64.
At the risk of sounding like Doug, I am going to say AU58 based on those photos. There are more than one problem area but the fields above Monticello are the most concerning to me. If my eyes are playing tricks on me and the coin is MS, I don't see it grading above MS64. A good album filler IMO.
Then why didn't you show us that? If this so-called "luster" exists, I would go 65. I see enough chatter and small nicks to keep it from a 66. Here are a couple 66's to compare.
Because my ghetto photography setup doesn't allow for it. I'm calibrated for copper! Your 43 looks pretty much like the luster I'm seeing in hand. My concern is the big black mark on the obverse.
