I found this nickel in the register today at work and from what I've read before, it's a war nickel made of copper/silver/manganese. However, what caught my eye is that the S mint mark is in a different spot. Upon further inspection, it looks like the S is actually crooked when compared with the rest of the coin. Is that a type of error, or are they all like that?
I looked at some other 1942 S silver nickels and yes yours is a little crooked. I don't believe it is significant enough to be a real rarity, but on the other hand I'm no expert on error coins.
The mintmarks were applied to each individual working die by hand using a punch and mallet to it is not unusual for them to "wander" about a bit or to be tipped one way or another.
