The 'S' mintmark looks like a double-die to me. The pics(scans) are just about the best I can do. The coin is worn to maybe VG-8 so making an judgement will be difficult. But I would appriciate it because I spent several hours on it tonight before taking a break from it. My guess is a DDR mintmark. Checking the Coneca Variety Vista MM Styles and one other reference it sure looks like it. Opinions please, thanks. zeke
It looks very much like Breen's 5184 RPM S/S which he says some say is S over Horiz. S. Not a DDR, but a Repunched Mintmark ( RPM) But .....that is a 1941 S Half.......and yours is 1942 S. BUT.... he says the 1942 S mintmark was from leftover 1941-S Dies, so I will go RPM with you. I don't know which one, but you say you have looked, so you probably already know the number. Good find. Jim
zeke: FYI: 1) It is a doubleD die, just being technical, but you should know; 2) The mintmark cannot be a doubleD die, it was hand punched into the die, with a 'hand punch'. It can be re-punched, that it, the first punch into the die was too weak so the die maker decided to apply it one more time. Also, it could be a triple punched, etc. 3) The die itself is made from a hub, and required two impressions, the second impression could have been moved, thereby creating a doubleD die.
Thanks everyone. So it is an ' RPM' . Just as well. Too bad it wasn't in better condition. It would be very interesting to see what it consisted of. I guess it could even be a large 'S' over a small 's'. At least my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. Doubled die, doubled die, got it. Thank thank you you. (LOL)
DOyou know if this would add any value/worth the coin. Can't find any answer to said question on-line. thanks zeke
