I went into a coin shop yesterday and saw a 1942 PR65 Mercury Dime in a PCGS holder. The dealer seemed to be friendly and he was asking $175 for it. I didn't have any books with me so I didn't get it. I am unfamiliar with the proofs in the series. When I got home I noticed the Blue Book has PF63 at $200. So I had some regrets. Any suggestions? If you collected Mercury Dimes would you get it? Thanks, Henry
Yeah get your butt back to the store and buy the coin, Maybe You could even negotiate a little better price!!
Yep it is a little ways away. It had little bluish and brownish spots of toning that I didn't find that attractive but it looked very well struck.
They run from $126 to $207 plus shipping on Heritage. So, he is definitely in the range. Depending on how nice it is, you may or may not be able to better his price.
And I have seen it in person over their pictures. If we remember back how bnb was unhappy with his pictures.
RLM I found most of the PR65's in the 200 -300 range. The ones that were in the $100s were from the early 2000s and 1999. Am I looking at the wrong thing?
I have no idea what you are looking at. All the prices I gave you were PCGS PF65 from late 2008 through current. The last one sold 8/2009 for $184. Here is my search on Heritage; http://coins.ha.com/common/search_r...SI_Titles-Desc&N=51+790+231+360+81+4294967176 BTW, as for prices, they are all over the map. Some due to the quality of the coin, some due to the current circumstances, and some just to make life interesting.
Here is the link on Heritage for 1942 Mercs in Proof 65 - Proof 65 Every one of them is in the range mentioned by rlm. If you are getting somthing else then provide the link for what you are looking at and let us see what you are doing wrong.
As a Dime collector Mercury are one of my better set, I be working him or her down price wise it may work.I know a complete raw 1942 Proof set still about $1250.00-$1400.00 but the condition is what counts
Just a few thoughts. These are really easy to find, so you can be picky. For some reason, many of these tone a bit ugly. Really nice ones bring a higher price. I think it's better to wait for something nice to come by.
What he said. Without sounding like a boring school teacher---> patience, patience, patience. Decide you WANT the coin BEFORE you start LOOKING for it. Then start LOOKING for the coin that you WANT! I won't get into the gotcha's of buying on ebay, heritatage, teletrade, etc. Best of luck sir. I have a weakness for Jefferson proofs and it's kind of the same thing with the Mercs as far as prices being all over the place.
Well said Pocket Change. I get way too off track when at a show or store. That is why my collection is not focused enough and it all over the place.
