I have a 1942 nickel with it looks like cooper spots. There is no mint mark. Does anyone know its value ?
Are you sure these is no mint mark? Those dates, the nickels had the mark on the reverse (not the obverse like today)...either to the right of Monticello or above it's dome. If there is a large mint mark above the dome the coin is silver and worth more than 5¢.
Philadelphia minted 49,789,000 regular (75% copper, 25% nickel) ones before they switched to making the silver and maganese war nickels. They then minted 57,873,000 of the silver ones with the large mintmark above Monticello's dome. If there's no large P above the dome than it's one of the first ones. This isn't a war nickel. If in MS65 condition could be worth up to 10 bucks max. In AU-50, they're worth about 1.50. In this condition though, and because of the stain which would give it poor eye appeal, it is likely only worth 5 cents. With such a high mintage, there would be a surplus of high grade examples around that the average collector could buy for their set for a few bucks.
