    Definitely environmental damage and/or 70 years of circulation.

    My theory - a dug up coin that was tumbled / cleaned with copper cents.

    Definitely Environmental..

    If it were struck on a copper planchet it would be the same size, width and weight of a Cent planchet.

    This, though not even necessarily cleaned with copper cents. I've dug nickels that were that color out of the ground, and stained that coppery color merely from the minerals in the soil.
