Does this look like a 1942/1 D dime? There is a D mint mark on the reverse. There is also no seam in the rim of the coin that would indicate tampering.
I'm gonna say no on this one. I could be wrong though. http://tinyurl.com/3sz6unu That is a link to a picture of a known one for reference.
There are two types of varieties for the 1942/1 Mercury Dime listed in The Cherrypickers' guide, and both of them are very prominently shown on the coin. This particular Mercury Dime does not look to have either of them, sorry to say. -Brian
CPG lists one 1942/1 (Philadelphia Mint) and one 1942-D 2 over 1 (Denver Mint). The OP stated his coin has a 'D' mintmark but it does not look like the 1942-D 2 over one shown in CPG and the Red Book. edit By the way, the 1942-D 2 over 1 is also an RPM. The OP should take a close look at the mintmark. If it is not repunched it is not the 1942-D 2 over 1.
Oh, alright. I was just going off of what I remembered for that date in CPG. I didn't realize one of the varieties was a Philly strike. My mistake... . And yes; It would be helpful if the thread creator were to post a picture of the reverse minkmark for confirmation on whether it acutally is this variety you speak of. -Brian
Although I do not know why a "42 merc would be faked, it looks to me that the 9 in the date is all wrong. It looks like an attempt at a counterfeit and a poor one at that.
Here is a closeup of the 1942/1 D. This was cherried in junk silver, now in an NGC XF-45 holder. Note the doubled 4, esp at the bottom, and the trace of the 1 at the bottom of the 2.
