So, here is another wheat penny from my treasure box. It appears to me,to have something under the "S." I don't think it's doubling but, I really have know idea.

Looks like circulation wear and tear.
Probably a hit on the mint mark.

Hard to see on the picture but there is a raised area under the top part of the S. Looks like another letter. So far I have agreed with everything you told me because I'm newbie and still learning but, Im not sure on this one.

Sarah2624 I can't see well enough to be sure what you have going on but the classic book on repunched mint marks is by Wexler. It will give you every known variety of every u s coin up to the date of publication and some idea of which ones are worth the most. To access the latest known information online look up the CONECA website and click on all the tabs to examine what they have. Happy Hunting.

I can't see the area in question well enough to address what you're seeing, but do keep in mind that circulation "damage" can also cause metal to be moved/displaced, and is something a lot of folks overlook when new. Considering the fact that literally billions and billions of have been in circulation, the possibilities are endless as to what could have happened while out in the wild.

If possible to get a clearer photo, I'm sure we'll be able to identify the actual cause.
