I recently bought this walker and sent it to ANACS. I was very sure it was a proof. It came back as AU58 Details - Cleaned. This was very odd to me, as I could have sworn it was a proof. What do you think? Sorry the pics aren't the best, hard to photograph a slabbed coin.

I would agree, cleaned and looks to have been polished. Time to dig into some books or online references so this does not happen to you again. Sorry.

I'm not particularly versed on proofs in this series, but it doesn't have the characteristics I'd expect to see in a proof. I think Tommy is right — polished.

    Nice sharp strike.
About as good as mine which is an PF-66.
Mine shows flow lines out towards the rim.

I don't know how to differentiate between MS and PF coins especially since some 1941 business strike dies were polished and used to strike proof coins.
Hence the "no initials" proof variety.
    They polished them off.

Oh my! I'd love to get that under serious magnification. Wasn't there an old technique where people would apply mercury to silver coins to make them appear proof? I think I remember mercury can amalgamate with silver and stay solid. Just a faint glimmer of a recollection.

Yeh, coating with mercury is an age-old method of improving a coin's look.
Problem is mercury is VERY toxic.
And it can be absorbed through the skin.

So how do you remove mercury.
    Easy. Just heat it.
Oops, that vaporizes it and thus can be absorbed by breathing in the vapors.
Heard of the Mad Hatter (Alice in Wonderland).
Mercury was used in making hats.
In the enclosed environment of a hatter's store there was lots of exposure.
    Result! Madness from brain damage.

I used to have a bottle of mercury I played with as a kid. I also wear a Biltmore Senator fedora in colder months. Genuine mercury formed hat. My brain damage is from a cerebral hemorrhage.

How’s that? This is the legislative office in which I work. The door over my shoulder is our Chief Counsel's. My body is blocking the doorway to mine, the one on the other side of the wall with the elongated House portraits.

And you thought my "retro" stuff was just shtick, huh? Sinatra IS on the iPhone. But then again, so are The Beatles, and so is Tay-Tay. (Taylor Swift) So is the Soviet National Anthem, and so is Gershwin's American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue.

Thanks y'all for the input. Definitely a great learning experience. Welp, at least the other coins I sent in made my money back!
