I picked this up today at our coin club for a $1.50 and was just wondering what you thought. The date is hard to make oput but it is a 1940. Any ideas as to what the value may be. Thanks for any help.

Your coin was treated with acid, which ate away much of the outer layer. That's what causes that orange peel effect. So, it's an example of an intentionally altered coin, basically post-mint damage.

Just my opinion but I think that the obverse of the cent has been in some type of acid.

Kind of what I was thinking but for the price I thought I would take a chance.
    Thanks again
