I have a chance to purchase a 1940 65PF merc dime for 90.00 It is currently residing in a old fat NGC holder with a valid cert number. Value on NGC's site is roughly 220.00. I guess this is technically a no brainer but, wanted to gage the forums thoughts.

Have you checked the S/N, sounds like a plausible counterfeit...

    Can you post pics?

Yes, I just checked the cert number and it is valid....

It is residing in a store here and isn't an auction ...

I didn't buy it yet, I wanted to at least come home and double check a few things, cert number and the like...

By the way, can I roughly date a holder by the numbers? This holder only has 6 digits plus the 3 digit versus the new ones that have 7+3

Okay, decided to go for it and I bought it. I loaded some photos, one of the holder and 2 others of the front and back.. Let me know how I ended up doing..

Does anybody else see an overdate, or are my eyes getting really bad ?

If the reverse of the slab has a hologram then it was slabbed in later '88, if not then it was late '87 or the first half of '88.

For the money you did just fine.

Think it's just a die chip.

There is a hologram on the back, though it is peeling somewhat.

I would guess that must possibly be a die chip as there were no over-date varieties for the 1940 proof.

The reverse is actually slightly rotated on this dime as well when looking at it straight on...

I see what you are talking about and it runs just across the top of the zero slightly to the right but I can't see anything beyond that or down thru the zero at all.
